Our family seems to have paused and parked over an unplanned study on Martin Luther (protestant reformer) and the churches history during that time. Luther is a key figure in the churches history for our family.

(the children said they were pleased that they had background information on Luther and the events in his life before watching this Dvd as it made the movie easier to follow.  The film is rated as PG13 -  and, in my opinion, is definitely not for sensitive, or young children.

 Daisy thought it was a shame the actor never 'aged' throughout the movie and was such a skinny Luther ☺)

 Lovely pictures in this book .. Daisy and I really like picture books so I include them in our book baskets all the time.  The interesting thing is that visitors also enjoy browsing through any picture books we may have out ☺ 

We also have this book - Reformation Heroes ~ Kleyn  - in our book basket, but have so many other resources to use that the children often do no more than have a quick glance through it. I've enjoyed reading through the easy reading excerpts on each reformer myself .

Our Week Ahead ~ Monday 10th February 2014

Our first week back and it's a disjointed one at that.
But, we persevere ☺

Most academic subject areas, at this stage of our learning year, are all in review mode as we click them back on.
In other areas of learning we are reading through introductory notes and chapters for the course work ahead.

- Audio: The Girl of the Limberlost ~ Porter
(completed)  This is one of my favourite books from way back,  yet it pays to note the mother is awful at the beginning of this book (nasty, embittered, and abusive!! ) and then a series of events happen that changes her life, her attitude, and the way she treats her daughter, Elnora.  A story of forgiveness, restoration, and redemption. If you enjoy Lamplighter books (Tracy ;-) ) then you'll appreciate this book... well, after you get past the awful mother portion!
By purchasing the kindle edition  first we were able to procure the whispersync audio (read by Christina Moore) for $2.99

Middle Ages Schedule 2014

Popping this post here, for those that may be interested in having a look at our Middle Ages schedule for 2014.

Bobs (14, this month) is in his 2nd year of NZ levelled highschool learning, and Daisy (12, this month - yep, two birthdays in one month ☺) is in her last year of intermediate levelled learning.

For those that want to just skip to a long list of books we selected, I've included that link at the end of this post.

Here is our block schedule, in it's entirety, which also includes our book basket options:

I've left our weekly schedule very open on purpose and will scrawl all over it as we go along, here's a sample of that:

In a nut shell: we are using Biblioplan's Companion Text as our leading spine and then branching out from there.
I do like BP's Companion Text - it's a perfect leaping off point as a discussion starter with my late logic, and early rhetoric stage children.
I learnt my lesson from trying to use Sonlight's schedule in the early years - someone else's schedule does not work for us - so I've ignored the thought of using a Biblioplan schedule and created our own.


Bobs chose Susan Bauer's History of:  the Middle Ages, and, the Renaissance & the Reformation as his history reading spines (there are no where near as many eye widening inserts in these books as there appear to be in the Ancient's volume - which he & I have been through together).
We've chosen medieval literature (including selections or tie-ins) from:
TWTM list (selections from the grade 10 list),
Greenleaf Press
etc..

Daisy chose Story of the World: Middle Ages for her history reading spine (though she may decide to move over into using Dorothy Mills books as we go along, maybe ☺).
We are using a huge chunk of Sonlight for her history based literature, selecting from:
(the old) Core 5/F,
the Middle Ages part of Core 6/F,
 and some Core 200 titles.
(I really like the old Sonlight book notes, and mapping work, so we are using those too.)
Also selected books from:
 Biblioplan's mega long book list,
Selections from Ambleside on line,
etc...

And now, we start ☺

Parents Review Magazine and a History Craft

This post has been sitting idle for quite a while, half formed and unfinished and since I'm getting 40 whole minutes of uninterrupted 'extra reading' time for myself each week I've elected to go back and pull out The Parents' Review Magazines, again, and amble my way through those while one child is their having music lesson - so I've decided it was past time to drag this post from it's 'draft spot' and post it here.

The Parents' Review leaflets that Karen Andreola must have work so hard over back then are still as relevant now all these years later. Each edition seems jam-packed with information and ideas for the Charlotte Mason inspired homeschooler.

Admittedly some editions of the magazine just seem to resonate more with me than others - perhaps because of where we are in our homeschool journey.

I appreciate the thoughtful questions Karen has compiled for "Discussion Questions for the Support Group" .


For those that enjoy any influence of Charlotte Mason in their homeschool life, and haven't read through Karen's compilation, I think you too may find some wonderful little gems to read, pause & ponder on.

So we drew out one to suit her face size, it's not flash or fancy ... but she's happy with it.

We are enjoying a gentle meander through the Middle Ages history of China and Japan with SOTW 2 and since we can not 'quickly' access many of the books listed in SOTW 2 we are pulling in a few extra’s, that we already have, for Daisy to enjoy.

Hands-on-History has some excellent and very do-able projects that our children will enjoy and lap~ note templates, which makes me one very happy marmee, then add to the mix 'a where to schedule into Core 2 side note' equals {{{{ happy dancing figure}}} .
The pdf details the projects with coloured photos of the completed crafts as well as the related resource/reference pictures.
The templates included for the crafts and lap~notes are clear, bold blackline and easy to print.
