I'm really wanting our study of Leonardo Da Vinci to be more than just a fly through introduction. So we're electing to do this as a rabbit trail and wish to create some longer lap~note pages, from the list below, when we get to this Renaissance multi-tasker in our study guide

Math Copywork and Create your Own Calendar

Both our children use to enjoy doing their own calendars with Sonlights Create-a-Calendar and since we like to do math copywork, a little done very well (!!), Marmee decided that once a month we'll make one of our Friday craft times into a math/craft/project time with ...... calendars.

Daisy started with crafting the calendar one of her cousins gave her...

(I can see her whole project starting to tip off into a paper-dolls-in- pockets fest).
This next picture came from http://www.funfelt.com/dolls.html . Daisy wants to attach it to her calendar and draw the faces herself. (It doesn't print so well, but it's what she'd like.)These are the templates we've decided to choose from for Bobbie for this year.

The possiblilites for this simplistic project are many, with a few being:
A photographic journal for crafts, & or events for the year.
Science based with clipart and child typed text.
Biography based.
A collection of the childs art for the year, photographed & pasted.
Artists.
Composers.
Or math. As Bobbi is doing this year.The 'art' on this is a photocopy of a cartoon face he drew, since the original was too big to use .
He then types out one of his favourite math quotes, prints it in a nice font, cuts and glues the quote to the calendar page, fills out the numbers in lovely handwriting.
All done.
Until next month. & we found these in our travels, the seasons for the christian calendar is wrong for the Southern Hemisphere but has many excellent ideas

Spelling & Language Arts Extras to Print & Make

We’ve been sorting out a few hands on games for language arts and spelling to enrich our learning time.

Board games feature in there as well, but I’ll just list some of our downloads.

Brainy Games.
We have, & do, like playing with these.

Contractions File Folder Game.

Contractions Card match.

Copywork sheet for Grammar.
We’ll complete and then cut and glue these onto the related grammar notebooking page, along with examples of each grammar term.

Spelling Bingo for current & review words.
With words such as their, there, and they’re, I just call out the word and a sentence it’s used it – not spelling it. I watch to see if the children identify the correct one on the game (!)
All other words I say and spell.

Vocabulary notebooking pages.

Daisy likes the read & draw.
(You can quickly have these pages completed by making this a clip art & gluing session.)

Use ideas listed here as a verbal reference or as a ‘handwriting’ & spelling exercise.

Create a literacy Dice for this also (this dice can be used for customised for many things).

We’ve enjoyed quite a few free on line games but here are two we currently like.
Spellits
Spin and Spell

Here is one of our home grown ideas next.

When playing snakes & ladders, to escape from going down the snake, the player has to correctly spell (X amount of) words from their learning list.

Daisy is really enjoying using All About Spelling (A.A.S) for her spelling/phonics lessons as well as some pages from Explode the Code (E.T.C).
We often use an A.A.S approach to make our lessons in E.T.C more hands on, not just written.
I personally don't enjoy using the All About Spelling program to teach so much, it feels like there are lots of steps to follow to make it work effectively, maybe it's just the stage we're at.
It is a good thorough program, but it’s just not my favourite tool to use - right now.
Still, since Daisy is enjoying and learning so well with A.A.S, I perservere.

Bobbi would rather use something else, so we’ve currently switched back to using Natural Speller by Kathryn Stout and working our way through Queen’s Learning to Spell with Copywork , in our own customised fashion :-)

Revisiting Bees

Daisy decided on our weeks break that she would really like to revisit bees ~ now that she's older (-:

We've had a lovely relaxed week reviewing and 're-learning' about these amazing creatures. Queen Bee, Worker Bee, Drone Bee

We went through our bees lapbook *again* and read The Magic School Bus Inside the Bee Hive .

This site is of interest to Bobbi, and if I was going to create a lap~note page for bees & The Magic School bus book (I'm not) that site has some very interesting clip art to use ....

We also found these links with a quick search, Bee Squidoo Lens and a very interesting nature site from this lapbooking blog, and once at Nature Detectives scroll down for bees.
Be sure to have a good browse around Erna’s blog, she’s detailed some lovely lapbooks and components....

And sorting around through our files I found a few interesting colour in pages and 2 lap~note type sheets that others may enjoy seeing too.

And, Daisy is going to try her hand (with marmee) during Friday craft time to make this adorable bees file folder as a gift for a small friends' birthday. I can see us 'customising' it a little.

Our History Timeline Book ~ Sonlight Book of Time

We typed a similar post on the Sonlight Forums a small while back, and for those that are not subscribers, we'll reshare those ideas here.
Here is the approach we used, and have been using since Bobbi & Daisy were quite young.

We'd always start our history timeline lessons, when they were younger, with reviewing our timeline books, 'This is where you are, here's Adam, here's Jesus Christ, now let's find XYZ ".

Verbalising the detail of the time when 'XYZ lived' and getting the Dc to note was it BC or AD.

We have limited 'spare/free' wall space so we use as an initial reference a pre-made time line book, The Timechart History of the World . This is concertina & folds out very looooong once fully opened.

The children delight in pulling this book out to use, often!!

We also use the Sonlight Book of Time and reference between these 2 books when placing the timeline figures in our SL books of time. (A timeline version much like "Where's Wally" .)

This system works very well for us, but is not such an instant visual option as a wall or large board timeline.

The Sonlight Book of Time has become a 'living' book the children are crafting, not just a plonk-the-sticker-in-&-shut-the-book, sort of project, until next time.

They quickly grasp that Sonlight's Book of Time is our exploded picture format and relates to a selected small pocket of history we may be looking at on our Time Line Chart.

(We started the SL B.o.T with Sonlight Core K (C) using 'stickers' of Bobbi and Daisy, us, & their grandparents. Including birth & death, marriage dates and the year that those of us gave our lives to Christ.

We then added Adam, & Jesus Christ, & we've been good to go since then!

I have to say, we really like these Sonlight Time Line books and the children have one each. At this stage we do not colour in the figures but are waiting until, perhaps, if they wish to, our next round through history.)

We use Home School in the Woods blackline stickers, sold here through Sonlight , to go with each Core as well as sourcing any extra figures we may need for out different history spine, Story of the World, and a history of science study off History Through the Ages C/Ds .

(We use the figures on these C/D's for a quite of things, lap~note pages, copywork, notebooking & projects for many subjects.)

We're also looking forward to using the Australian New Zealand History figure of Janette's C/D (detailed in an previous post).

Xzavan gave a very excellent idea on the Sonlight forums; Paper clip the pre-cut figures to the week they are listed on Sonlights schedule. This way you don’t forget to add/use them.

We’ve created a variant of her idea by waiting until the 6th week of our learning schedule and add any relevant figures then which is a good time to verbally review the history portion or person they represent.

Hands-on-History has some excellent and very do-able projects that our children will enjoy and lap~ note templates, which makes me one very happy marmee, then add to the mix 'a where to schedule into Core 2 side note' equals {{{{ happy dancing figure}}} .
The pdf details the projects with coloured photos of the completed crafts as well as the related resource/reference pictures.
The templates included for the crafts and lap~notes are clear, bold blackline and easy to print.
