I hadn't done enough homework on what happened during the cocoon stage and thought the hard case with, what sounded like, a dried up pea rattling around inside it was a failed attempt.
We tossed it into an ornamental vase on my kitchen knick knack shelf and forgot about it. Three years later the ornamental vase started to make loud tapping noises. Ha!
Watching that first emperor gum moth drill it's way out was pretty amazing.
God's creation is certainly fascinating: our family learn so many wonderful life lessons by observing the creatures and critters God has created.
Fast forward to this summer.
The moth pictured in this post only ☺ took 2 years to hatch.
This emperor gum moths cocoon hatched pretty quickly though - once he got started - from the time we heard the first loud tap, to the moth having successfully drilled it's way out of the cocoon, hatching took no more than about 20 minutes. Once out, our newly hatched moth quickly got itself to a darkened area in our hall way to dry off.

I came via Maher's Hill blog when I saw your post in the blog roll. We were reading about the Emperor Gum Moth today. Great photo! Just showed it to the kids who drew one from a nature book as we didn't have the real thing.

Emperor gum moths just are fascinating.
I didn't know they took that long! I had one years ago and tossed it after it hung around for a year. I feel bad now! ;) How special to watch one hatch. Mr V. would not like to watch that at all! Moths are not on his list of favourite creatures. Love the photo.
I've had fun researching your moth, youtube has a cool video on them besides the Wikipedia information. My ultimate, favorite moth is the Luna Moth; which looks similar to the Emperor gum moth. What a great story you've shared with us! We also love to keep some chrysalis's to hatch in our home! But, we usually get more butterflies. This fall I didn't bring any in...maybe next year! Thanks so much for sharing, as I have never seen or heard of this specific moth.

(I'll have to go browsing for Luna moth's now !)
